India stands 4th in production of iron ore after Brazil, Australia and Chaina with production reaching 114 million tones during 2004. India is currently operating at more than 100% of  its production capacity. India is the third largest exporter of iron ore in the world after Australia and Brazil. The exports form  India grew at an annual rate of about 17% during 2000 - 2004. The share of exports in total domestic production of  iron  ore has been varing between 44 - 55% during 1997 - 2004. Chaina has been the major driver for growth in iron ore exports form India.
The domestic  steel  market  is  anticipated  to grow at about 6 - 7% anually during the next 5 - 6 years. Hence due to this the total demand for iron ore from India is also expected  to grow  at  about 8 - 10% p.a. during the next 5 - 6 years, par of which will be from domestic end users (6% p.a.) and the balance  from export market. It is to be noted that the production capacity of the industry has to increase to meet the growing demand for iron ore both from domestic as well as export market.
