Coal
Coal can be broadly classified into two
categories - cooking coal and non - cooking coal. Cooking
coal is primarily used for metallurgical applications whereas
non-cooking coal is used as fuel in power plants and for production
of Sponge Iron. India has shortage of cooking coal
but there are abundant deposits of non cooking coal. Whereas
India is importing cooking coal to feed its
blast furnaces, there is no problem regarding availability
of non - cooking coal, which is
required for power generation and sponge
Iron production. |

| The basic property
of coal is the heat potential or its calorific vcontent. Coal also
contains ash, moisture and other impurities. The heating value of
coal reduces with increase in ash content, as some heat is required
to burn the ash. |

Reserve
position of coal
Indian coal accounts for about 0.8% of the geological reserves
and 5.7% of the proven reserves in the world USA, Russia, UK, France,
Belgium, Australia, South Africa and Canada are some of the countries
having large deposits of good quality metallurgical coal. |

Dolomite
Dolomite is mainly used as a desulphrising agent to prevent
the pick up of sulphur by the sponge iron from the sulphur released
by the burning of coal inside the furnace. The initial specifications
for dolomite were 1 - 4 mm later it was far more suitable by which
the consumption can be reduce by 50%. This was mainly due to the fact
that lot of dolomite fines were being lost to waste gases and with
4 - 8 mm fraction this loss was minimized. India has adequate Dolomite
reserves and hence avalability is not a problem. |
